“Workplace allies” are people who are willing to personally align themselves with colleagues to make sure they’re heard and included. When most employees are confronted with the problems of discrimination, harassment, and other bad behaviour at work, they assume that their job is limited to their own behaviour.

In this interactive and engaging session, Joanne Lockwood speaks about what you can do right now to step up and step into being an effective workplace ally for LGBTQIA+ colleagues and customers, especially for those who identify as Trans, Non-Binary or Gender Diverse.

Language can also cause barriers, fear of saying the wrong thing, being clumsy or outdated or not being accountable for bad outcomes or impact, despite the best of intentions.

Joanne will discuss some of the challenges being faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and how these affect every aspect of daily life – in the workplace and wider within society in general.

Key discussion points will include:

  • Know what it means to be an Ally
  • Creating an understanding of different identities and sexualities
  • Dispel many of the myths that will make you a better ally
  • Offer some good and not-so-good language to consider

Following the presentation, Joanne will be around for an open Q&A where you can challenge her with your thoughts or maybe event ask her for some ideas on how you can tackle your own challenges.
