“Workplace allies” are people who are willing to personally align themselves with colleagues to make sure they’re heard and included. When most employees are confronted with the problems of discrimination, harassment, and other bad behaviour at work, they assume that their job is limited to their own behaviour.

In this interactive and engaging session, Joanne Lockwood speaks about what you can do right now to step up and step in to being an effective workplace ally for Trans, Non-binary or Gender Diverse colleagues and customers.

Language can also cause barriers, fear of saying the wrong thing, being clumsy or outdated or not being accountable for bad outcomes or impact, despite the best of intentions.

Joanne will discuss some of the challenges being faced by Trans and Non-binary individuals and how these affect every aspect of daily life – in the workplace and wider within society in general.

Key discussion points will include:

  • Know what it means to be a Trans and Non-binary Ally
  • Creating an understanding of different gender identities and sexualities
  • Offer some good (and not-so-good) language to consider
  • How sharing pronouns is a great way to be inclusive of Trans and Non-binary people
  • Awareness of the impact of hate crimes and negative media coverage
  • Top tips to become an effective trans ally in your workplace and society

Following the presentation, Joanne will be around for an open Q&A where you can challenge her with your thoughts or maybe even ask her for some ideas on how you can tackle your own challenges.
